#ENDSARS : The Birth of a New Nigeria?

Over the past few days, I’ve read stories and watched heart-wrenching videos of the incessant brutality by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad(SARS) whose main objective is to perform undercover operations against crimes associated with armed robbery, kidnapping, crimes associated with firearms amongst others.

I’ve been left with tears and heartbreak, feeling helpless but hopeful that our cries and protest would yield good result.

On Saturday 3rd October 2020, a video started trending on social media showing how a SARS police officer shot a young Nigerian to death in front of Wetland Hotel, Ughelli, Delta state and drove off with the young man’s vehicle, a Lexus SUV. This was one of the many videos that has gone round the Internet clearly showing the brutality of these organizations that are supposed to protect us from Kidnappings, armed robbery and the likes.

Youths are arrested and charged with different unexplained crime like murder for not accepting to their demands of money.

Where does it say that driving a fancy car means you’re a fraudster?

Where does it say that wearing the latest design means you’re a fraudster and a thief?

Where does it say that using the latest iPhone means you’re into illegal yahoo business?

These are some of the reasons why the SARS unit continue to harass and kill innocent young Nigerians.

They extort money from who they can for flimsy accusations like carrying a laptop and an iPhone.

They kill and dump the bodies of those who refuse to unlock their phones so they can search their privacy or from who they can’t benefit from.

On Thursday 8th October 2020, a nationwide peaceful protest began, calling for the end and full dissolution of the SARS body.

The protest has yielded little results as the government have been silent on the whole issue.

They have also attacked and killed peaceful and unarmed protesters who are fighting for their rights.

Why they keep doing that would never make sense to me. Can anyone tell the Police men that we’re also fighting for them? Fighting for their well-being and increased pay.

The youths are not fighting to end the continuous corruption in the country or the unemployment rate, lack of electricity, bad roads and insecurity. They are fighting to stay alive!

The youths deserve to live freely and comfortably!

We don’t need to work a 9–5 job to earn money.

This is the twenty first century, people are allowed to work from home!

Over a week now, the protest has been ongoing in various part of the country calling and asking the government to end the SARS movement and as a young Nigerian it has been one of the best days of my life.

The youths have woken up and are fighting for their rights. Together as one, they’re pushing for the end of SARS and bad governance both online and offline.

The goosebumps gotten from the videos of the protest are unexplainable.

But now the protest isn’t just focused on the #EndSars movement but also on the bad governance.

We’re aiming for a new and better Nigeria!

The youths are tired!

We deserve better!

Nigeria is a nation filled with corrupt leaders and failed governance who find pleasure in mocking the youths.

We’ve watched how the government have scammed us of a good and better life as youths and we’ve done nothing about it.

Now we’re awake!

We’ll get our land back.

We’re not just the leaders of tomorrow!

We’re also the leaders of today!
